HOME - ABOUT BRIDGE TO UNDERSTANDING

Understanding The Person, Not Just What We See On The Surface.

Bridge to Understanding is a family-owned and operated therapy and behaviour support provider built on a simple belief: every person deserves to feel understood, respected and genuinely supported.

OUR APPROACH

Looking beyond what can be seen on the surface.

We take the time to look beyond what can be seen on the surface. Behaviour, emotions, experiences, trauma, development and individual needs can all be part of a person's story, but they do not define who that person is.

Whether someone is seeking support with behaviour, development, emotional wellbeing, independence, relationships or everyday life, we want to understand the whole person — their strengths, needs, communication, experiences, environment, goals and what matters to them.

Our approach is person-centred, neuro-affirming and trauma-informed. We recognise that no two people are the same, and we don't believe their support should be either.

At BTU, we want people to receive high-quality professional support without losing the human side of care.

WHAT MATTERS TO US

Reliability, compassion, integrity and dedication are at the heart of the organisation we are building.

These aren't simply words we place on our website — they are the standard we want reflected in how we communicate, how we work and how we treat the people who place their trust in us.

Our family is at the heart of Bridge to Understanding.

FAMILY BEHIND BTU

Behind Bridge to Understanding is our family — Lindy, Thomas and Olivia — alongside a growing team of practitioners who share the values we want BTU to represent.

For us, Bridge to Understanding is much more than a business. It is something we care deeply about and are incredibly proud to build together as a family.

Being family-owned influences the way we run BTU. Our reputation is personal to us, and so is the quality of the service we provide.

We understand the trust involved in choosing someone to support you or a person you care about. Our practitioners may be welcomed into people's homes, schools, workplaces, support teams and lives. We may be there through achievements, periods of change, difficult moments and important milestones.

We don't take that responsibility lightly.

As parents ourselves, we also understand what it means to want the very best for someone you love. It has helped shape the type of organisation we want BTU to be — one where people are treated with kindness and respect, communication matters, commitments are taken seriously and people know they can rely on us.

As BTU grows, those values will remain fundamental to who we are.

MEET LINDY & THOMAS

Clinical And Operational Leadership, Brought Together By A Shared Vision.

Bridge to Understanding is led by husband-and-wife team Lindy Steyn and Thomas Johns.

We bring different strengths and professional backgrounds to the organisation, but share the same vision: to build a service people can trust and a workplace that supports practitioners to provide exceptional care.

Lindy Steyn

Lindy leads the clinical direction of Bridge to Understanding.

With qualifications and experience across education, psychology, behaviour support, early intervention, behaviour therapy and counselling, Lindy's work has always centred around understanding people and what may be happening beneath what we see on the surface.

She is passionate about looking beyond behaviour, emotions, experiences or a diagnosis and asking what may be happening underneath, what the person may be communicating, what they need from the people around them and how support can make a meaningful difference in their everyday life.

Her approach is compassionate, curious and individualised. She believes people should never be reduced to a diagnosis, behaviour or list of difficulties. Their strengths, interests, personality, relationships, experiences, hopes and goals are equally important.

Alongside her clinical work, Lindy leads the development of BTU's clinical services and supports practitioners to continue developing their knowledge, skills and confidence while delivering thoughtful, evidence-informed and individualised support.

Thomas Johns

Thomas leads the operational side of Bridge to Understanding.

While much of his work happens behind the scenes, his role is fundamental to ensuring BTU remains organised, responsive, reliable and sustainable.

Thomas oversees operations, systems, administration and the day-to-day processes that keep the organisation running effectively.

His focus on accountability, consistency and reliability supports our practitioners to spend more of their time doing what they do best — supporting people.

Together, Lindy and Thomas bring the clinical and operational sides of BTU together, with a shared commitment to providing a service that is professional, dependable and genuinely caring.

MORE THAN A SERVICE

We Don't Want Bridge To Understanding To Feel Like Just Another Provider.

We want people to feel known, respected, heard and valued.

That means taking the time to listen and understand the person rather than making assumptions based on what we see.

It means working collaboratively with families, carers, support teams, schools and other professionals when appropriate.

It means being approachable when someone has a question or concern.

It means recognising strengths and celebrating progress — including the achievements that may seem small to others but can mean everything to the person and the people who care about them.

And it means remembering that behind every appointment, email, assessment, therapy session, report and behaviour support plan is a real person with their own story.

Reliability is particularly important to us.

RELIABILITY & CARE

A provider people can rely on.

People should be able to rely on the professionals they have chosen to support them.

We understand the impact that poor communication, inconsistency and lack of follow-through can have on individuals, families and support teams.

We want BTU to be a provider that shows up, communicates, follows through and takes responsibility for the quality of the service we provide.

Professional knowledge and evidence-informed practice are incredibly important to us, but so is the way that knowledge is delivered — with patience, respect, consistency, understanding and genuine care.

BUILDING SOMETHING WE BELIEVE IN

Our Goal Has Never Been To Simply Become The Biggest Provider.

Therapy

We want to be a provider people trust.

We want Bridge to Understanding to be known for the quality of our work, but equally for our reliability, compassion, integrity and dedication to the people we support.

As BTU grows, our team will grow. Our services will evolve. We will continue learning, developing and finding new ways to support people across all ages and stages of life.

But growth should never mean losing the things that matter to us.

We never want to become too big to care about the individual.

We never want systems and processes to become more important than people.

We never want growth to come at the expense of quality.

And we never want to lose the passion, dedication and personal responsibility that come from being a family-owned business.

We want to build a team of practitioners who share those values — people who genuinely care about the quality of their work, who take the time to understand the people they support, who continue learning and developing, and who recognise the responsibility that comes with being trusted to support another person.

That is the Bridge to Understanding we are building.

A SERVICE THAT TAKES THE TIME TO UNDERSTAND.

A team that genuinely cares.
A provider you can rely on.

Understanding people. Supporting all ages. Genuine care at every stage.
